Review
Raging storm, rain slicked roads, a car crash… Followed by a distant light illuminating an isolated mansion…  If this book was written by Agatha Christie the heroine would have spent the story shivering with unease, gasping in fright, and tripping over dead bodies. Since it was written by Cherise Sinclair there are no dead bodies. Unease? Oh yeah. Moments of fright? Definitely. But no dead bodies.

The unease and fright show up when very conservative Jessica is given the option to ‘join the party’ – only to find out it’s a very private club for BDSM players. Much of it scares her but some of it turns her on – and that scares her even more. As an independent businesswoman she just KNOWS that all that submission stuff is wrong, doesn’t she?

Our hero, known as Master Z inside the club, is intrigued by the obviously submissive tendencies in Jessica and her glaringly obvious discomfort with what she’s seeing and feeling. He helps her understand the dynamics of the lifestyle while feeding the attraction between them.

Z has patience, style, and the whole Master dynamic in spades – of course she falls for him. Jessica has vulnerability, a caring heart, and great passion waiting to be released. She is both fascinated and frightened by his world but is willing to give her trust to him. Z falls for her in a way he never has before.

The book is short, more novella than novel, but the ending is satisfying. Obviously the romance will be growing in future books. It’s a good introduction to the series and some of the heroes we’ll be seeing in the future.

“World’s full of variety, why not sex? Everything in there is — what’s the phrase? — safe, sane, and consensual. Yeah. If they like a little more kink to get their rocks off, it’s no business of mine.”
-Ben, the door guard at Shadowlands
