KINKY LOWDOWN with Sierra Cartwright

You can take 5 items/men to a fully catered desert island – what/who would you take?    J

Zow! Okay, I’m in…

One man: my future husband. Four toys: a flogger, the Hitatchi, clamps, and, ah, restraints. J We are assuming the fully catered includes margaritas and beer? Otherwise, I’ll trade in clamps and restraints for the beer and margs. ;)

C’mon, let’s go!

Do you have a favourite author(s)? Who is it/are they?
Oh, yes! JD Robb, Harlan Coben, Lee Childs, Lisa Gardner, Cherise Sinclair, Maya Banks, Sylvia Day… Auto buys for sure!

How did you start your writing career?
There hasn’t been a time that I didn’t write, honestly. I penned my first book at age nine. I started the school newspaper in elementary school. I wrote fan fic in high school. I wrote for the high school paper. I continued writing into early adulthood, writing ten books in ten years before finally selling to Harlequin/Silhouette. I ended up taking a hiatus after my divorce, and when I returned to writing, my tastes ran toward erotic romance. Fortunately epublishing was booming by then! I am very lucky!

Which character was the hardest to write and why?
All of my characters are difficult to write, honestly. I spend a lot of time angsting over creating complex, emotionally rich, flawed, but (hopefully!) redeemable people. I draw on traits from people I know, but each character is unique. I wish I could say it’s easy, but it’s not. And it becomes more and more complicated with each book as I strive to raise the stakes on complicated characters.

Who’s your favourite character? And what would let him/her do to you in the Dungeon?
Okay, hands-down, Julien Bonds. I LOVE this guy. He doesn’t take himself seriously, but he takes everything he does very seriously, whether it’s creating something new, working, meddling in friends’ lives, or playing. I’m still writing the Bonds series, so I’m not sure, exactly, what Julien’s tastes are in the dungeon, but I will tell you a little secret…I’d let him do just about anything. I’m as adventurous as he is. So, Julien…? Bring it on!

If you write under an alias/Nome de plume, how do you deal with being addressed by that name?
I had the funniest experience! I was at the grocery store and the clerk gave me the receipt to sign. She said, can I get your autograph? Well, I signed my pen name! She was being funny and meant “signature.” But my autograph is different from my signature! LOL So I had to scratch it out and put my legal name on the receipt.
~LOL!! Ooops!~

What made you decide to pick an alias?
Because I had a bit of a following at Harlequin/Silhouette, I didn’t want to shock fans who picked up an erotic romance when they were expecting something different! I wanted to keep my more traditional stories separate from my spicy, push-the-boundaries books.

What was it about kink that made you choose the genre?
When I was at Harlequin/Silhouette, I wrote for the Desire line, so my books always had a certain flavour. I’ve never shied from writing sex scenes. So, for me, erotic romance was a natural extension. I still write emotional stories, but I love to push the bounds. I find that adding kink allows me to explore emotion in greater depth. I couldn’t be happier.

What extent do you go to, to research for what you write?
Well, I’m always happy to take one for the team. So, just for you, I’ll do plenty of research to be sure we have an authentic experience. J I won’t kiss and tell, but I’ll say that I enjoy my work.

If you weren’t an author, what would you have ended up doing?
I waited tables for five years and loved connecting with people. (Refilling the salt shakers? Not so much.) I also ran a small business in the automotive industry. We went from 100K a year in sales to nearly 3.3 million in a few years. That was a kick. Beyond that, I would have wanted to be a professional tennis player. (Turns out you need talent for that, though.)

Do you have any rituals/habits when you write?
Twizzlers and Jimmy Buffet.

What would be the weirdest one?
Those aren’t weird enough?

I do my best brainstorming in the shower. I used to think it was because the water soothed me, but it turns out I think it’s because I’m away from the computer and the phone. I’m able to totally let my brain go. So, uh, I’ve been known to take three showers a day when I’m writing hard. I can’t believe I admitted to that.

Is there anything on your current/upcoming release schedule?
I’m in the middle of the Bonds series for Totally Bound. And then, hang onto your hats! I have a trilogy planned that will be much longer, and deeper in scope!

Where are your books available?
I’m at all the distributors, including Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

KINKY SPOTLIGHT - Jennifer James #3

COVERT CRAVING
Stripping is her super power.
Thirteen years after a glowing pond left Chloe Sanders with special abilities, she uses her “gift” to take out criminals when she can. If she’s got to be part of a freak show, she’s going to do some good while in the buff.
You have the right to remain naked.
Color blind detective, Jacob Greiff, has a few "gifts" of his own and would like to find a solution to his quirks, but his priority right now is busting the vigilante leaving burglars tied up with panty hose and women’s scarves. He wasn't ready for the petite, bare foot brunette in an enormous trench coat at his crime scenes--or seeing her in vivid color.
A match made in nuclear waste....
Despite his own supernatural abilities and the raging lust between them, Greiff wonders if Chloe isn’t some kind of nut who gets off on public nudity. She insists she can disappear from view when naked, and that he’s the only one who can see her when she’s in disguise.
...or is it love?

Their shared past comes to a treacherous intersection when a man shows up at Chloe’s apartment and informs them at gun point it’s time to report for duty—or else. A hero and his reluctant eye-witness will have to come to a truce, find a way to keep their clothes on, and save the world in the blink of color-blind eye.

Synopsis
After a devastating blow to her already fragile self esteem, werewolf Lindy Vincent has decided to stop being the pack whore and change her life for the better. With the help of her two best friends, her alpha female, and a feisty she-wolf named Eula, Lindy starts down the road of self-improvement, happy for the first time in years.

Crimson Ta'rek is a Wulfen, a cross between a wolf and a fairy, and the only one of his kind. After casting a spell for his truemate, he finds himself in the Mortal Realm rescuing the she-wolf meant to be his. When someone from his past threatens Lindy, Crimson will show the realm why no one messes with a Wulfen's mate.

This book contains one Wulfen with eyes only for his mate, a she-wolf trying to start her life over, and the spell that brings them together. Expect plenty of shifting, growling, and neck biting, fairy magic, and gratuitous use of the word "mine."

About the Author
I always wanted to be a homebody and live in one place for my entire life, but fate had other plans. In the past twelve years of my married life, we’ve moved seven times, including from one coast to the other. Southern New Jersey is home now and I love it.  I have two young children, a husband who begrudgingly pays for my ebook addiction, and two dogs that think they’re people. After college, I spent eight years as an executive assistant before “retiring” at twenty-seven to become a stay-at-home mom. I have a soft spot for self-published authors, Ghirardelli chocolate, muscle cars, and men with tattoos.  Most people who know me don’t know I have a tattoo of a tiger on my hip or that I have an unhealthy obsession with The Simpsons.
I love sunsets, several cups of coffee in the morning, and I absolutely cannot live without books. When I’m not busy with my family, you’ll find me sitting at my desk working on any number of projects, including reading, reviewing, and writing.
I adore talking to fans and other authors, so please write to me!  You can email me atrebutlerauthor@gmail, find me on twitter @rebutlerauthor, or join me on Facebook at R.E.ButlerAuthorPage.

PART 1 - BLOG TOUR & AUTHOR LOWDOWN with Becca Lee

In celebration of Becca's debut novel hitting the stores, The Picky Bitches participation in the Blog Tour is going to be broken into two parts - Part One will have this fabulous interview with Becca and Part Two will contain the synopsis, review and other pertinent information about this kick-arse new release! Part Two will follow in a couple of hours :)
~Enjoy, Amanda~

You can take 5 items/men to a fully catered desert island – what/who would you take?
Ooh, the possibilities ... I would of course take my filled Kindle with charger, my razor - my hairy legs just aren't pretty, my hubby - I know there's lots of dreamy men out there, but my hubby likes my wobbly bits :). My fourth item would be a nail file - it's so bloody frustrating when my nails are jagged! My final item would by a pack of hair bands. My hair is crazy long and regularly gets stuck under my armpits at night - yep - annoying!

If you had to choose a tattoo for someone else to get, what would it be and who would be the victim?
My character Liam will be getting a very special tattoo is A Perfect Love, book two in my Perfect Series. I can't tell you. I want it to be a surprise. :)

How does it feel to be publishing your very first book?
Bat-shit crazy exciting. I'm freaking out slightly and am bugging the hell out of my family. I want to release NOW, but am equally terrified - what if people hate it. eek! Okay, I don't want to think about it any more.

What was your gut reaction when you got your first review of A Perfect Moment?
Holy freaking crap! Are they for real! I then squealed and jumped on my hubby, who was fast asleep at the time. So psyched about every single review I receive. I'm sure bad ones will start coming in at some point. I just have to remember, we're all different and are not built to like the same things.

Do you have any words of wisdom to other aspiring writers who may be embarking on the journey you're undertaking?
Bite back your fear and embarrassment (Yes, I was as embarrassed as hell telling my hubby what I was doing - for me that was about the fear of failure and being laughed at) and 'just' write. I know it's a damn sight more difficult than that, but I am a firm believer that everyone has a story in them. the first step is the courage to try.

And a few extra questions after release day ...

What did you do to celebrate your debut release?
I spent the day with a cheesy grin on my face, and ended the night with copious amount of gin and tonics and yummy food with an awesome group of my friends.

How many happy dances have you done this weekend?
At least 48 :D lol Still doing them now, much to the amusement of my family.

How loud did you squeal when you saw the #55 ranking in amazon?
Holy crap - did I! and some! So freaking excited and blown away. *squeal*

Thank you so much for spotlighting me and my debut release. I'm so excited to be here. :) ~Becca~

**And, just in case you missed it the first time, here's the original interview done with Becca Lee in February 2014**

There’s a spaceship leaving Earth and you’re allowed to take a suitcase of essentials and five other items, what do you take?
My Kindle, a wind-up battery charger :), my BOB – hey, a woman needs a release!, a pack of cards and a machete – just in case I encounter any evil aliens!

Who is your favourite author?
I seriously don’t have ‘a’ favourite. I do love Laurell K Hamilton though.

How did you start your writing career?
I’ve always loved reading and writing. I went to university and achieved my BA in Literature. I first started writing ten years ago, but was too chicken-shit to do anything about it. It got to the point this past Christmas that I finally spoke to my husband that I had a desire to write and publish a book – I have all these ideas floating around my head. He simply told me to go for it. So here I am.

Which character was the hardest to write and why?
A Perfect Moment is my debut novel, set for release in April. To be honest, all of my characters roll easily off my fingers to my screen. I suppose my main character Ella is a little bit of a challenge. I didn’t want her to be me, even though there are some similarities. So ensuring she had a personality all of her very own has been a little bit challenging.

Why did you choose to write romance? Favourite style to write?
I write what I know and I love. I’ve been lucky in love so I selected this genre as my debut novel. Saying that, I have a piece of erotica forming in my brain, much to my husband’s delight. I also have the first 25k words of a paranormal romance going. Admittedly, paranormal romance is my favourite genre to read. I do need escapism and pnr does this for me.

If you weren’t an author, what would you have ended up doing?
Well, like most indie authors I work fulltime. I’m a high school teacher. I suppose being a fulltime author is my dream job.

Do you have any rituals/habits when you write?
When writing a passionate or highly emotive scene I rely on my playlist to give me some spark. I also like to have lie down and think time. Other than that, I write when I feel the need. Not necessarily the best idea since I’m edging closer to my editing deadline. Eek!

What would be the weirdest one?
In my ‘lie down and think’ time, I’ve been known to head out to the verandah, where it’s quiet and lie on our outside table. J

If you write under an alias/Nome de plume, how does it feel to have emails etc. addressed to your other name?
I do write under a super-secret alias – for a whole bunch of reasons. I do plan one day, to reveal my face, but right now isn’t the time. It does feel a bit strange. It’s also quite difficult, especially when flicking from one name to the other. It’s a quite nice and effective way to get into my writing head space though.

What is on your current and upcoming release schedule?
A Perfect Moment (#1 Perfect Series) is due for release April 2014!! (Which has now been released and available everywhere!!!)
Changing Moon (my PNR) is due for release July 2014
A Perfect Love (#2 Perfect Series) is due for release December 2014

Poetry Corner - A Journey to Freedom By Kristen Debler

A Journey to Freedom
By Kristen Debler

Introduction
In the year 1866, Prussia and Austria declared war on each other. Many people fled Prussia and Austria because they did not want to fight or have their sons fight in the war. This war in history, is known as the Seven Weeks War. This story is inspired by the journey of my great-grandmother, Christine Debler, on her way to America. She journeyed here from Bessarabia, Russia, which was part of Prussia. I want to dedicate this story to her. She was a magnificent woman who overcame humongous obstacles. Even though the characters in this story are fictional the part about Leisel getting sick on the ship is what actually happened to my grandmother on her trip to America. The story takes place in Prussia during the beginning of the war.

Part One
“Leisel, come back here,” Mutter scowled. But, I didn't listen. I just couldn't stand to be inside anymore. It was like the summer breezes were calling me to go out and frolic with them. I could hear the birds singing in the trees, smell the scents of the flowers. I could even hear the bees buzzing and making beautiful music together, and feel the sunshine bathing the red earth. It was a beautiful summer afternoon and I was not going to spend it inside. As I walked out the door, I felt the sun bathe me in its warmth. The tingling feeling of the heat was playing intimate sensations on my skin and I just stood there letting its platonic fingers touch my face. The sensations caused a sudden burst of energy to penetrate the muscles in my legs and feet. Before I knew it, I was running down the walk, through our familiar trodden path, to the field with a brook running nearby.
I played in the field by the brook for hours, unconsciously losing all track of time. Before I knew it, the moon was dancing on the hazy lit sky of the new evening, cradling the sun and reflecting God’s miraculous works through a bright array of colors, being painted by an invisible hand. With no flaws, as if the entire canvas had a planned journey and the painter was just the hand doing the part. On my way home, I looked into the millions of eyes of the moonlit sky and felt a surge of happiness run through me. Life was good.
As the feeling was still clinging to my soul, I noticed a being in the house with my mother. As I looked into the window closely, I realized the shadowed silhouette dancing in the fragmented pieces of the window was not my father. I scurried into the house, pre-tempered and shocked. Who was this man? But, as I entered the room, my mother and a very tall soldier turned towards me. The mas was dressed in a soldier’s attire and my precarious attempts of anger left me for fear. I stood looking at the man, baffled, but with a respectful stance.
“Leisel, this is Sergeant Franz Heiter, he is here to talk about your brothers," Mutter said with a worried expression on her face. Sergeant Heiter held his hand out to me and I shook it. “It is very nice to meet you.” He turned towards my mother, “We will be in touch Ma’am.” Mutter sat down as the soldier left, clutching her hand over her mouth. I knew why she was upset. Fater and she had recently been talking about the war. It seemed that both sons were of legal age to fight. Franz was fifteen and Dieter was seventeen.
Fater came home and saw Mutter in the chair. “Leisel, can you go to your room please? I need to talk to your Fater.” I ran into the back room and ran head first into Franz. I pushed him out of way. “Mutter and Fater are talking about you.”
Dieter answered, “I know. We saw the Sergeant. What are they saying?”  Franz wasn't going to stand around and wait to be summoned and started to eavesdrop from the hallway. We both followed. It seemed like Mutter and Fater talked for forever. They called us all into the room and we could tell that this was going to be a very uncomfortable conversation. The tension was extremely contagious.
“Leisel, Franz, and Dieter, come here please. We need to talk to you,” Fater said. I could tell that Mutter was upset. She was clutching onto the arms of her chair and her arms were turning white. “Kinder,” Fater said. “You know that we love you all very much. That is why what we are about to do concerns the well being of this entire family and you are all going to have to be very brave, okay?”
“What are you talking about? Does this have to do with why the Sergeant was here today?” I asked curiously. My two brothers gave each other worried expressions, and Fater looked at us wisely. We all became very quiet.
“How do I begin to put this in a way that you children understand?” Fater asked himself.
“Fater just tell us. We are not children anymore. We have the right to know.” Dieter said sternly.
“You are right son. You are not little children anymore. As you know, Austria and Prussia declared war against each other. The army is recruiting soldiers starting around the age of fifteen, to train. That is why the sergeant was here today. Your Mutter and I have been discussing this for a long time, and we have come up with a solution to your brothers' fighting and possibly dying in this war. We are going to move, because if we do not then the world that we know is going to change anyway."
Leisel interrupted. “Where are we moving to?” she asked excitedly.
“Leisel, always in the mood for an adventure. Well, we have contemplated this and there is really not much that we can do in the rest of Europe, and home would be so close for comfort. We are going to move to America. Where we can start our lives over again.” All of the happy expressions left the children’s faces.
“America,” Franz had finally broken the silence. “America is a country very far away. What are we supposed to do there? We can’t even speak the language. How are we going to understand them, let alone cope with the culture and the people? I don’t want to start over. I do not want to leave my home, where I have grown up. This town has loved plowed into it, my heart tattooed into it, and my ancestors blood shed into it. How can we leave our country and our countrymen behind? They will think that we are cowards.”
“Son, protecting your family from the nightmares of war and the shadows of death is not cowardice. You and your brother have not lived your lives yet, and your Mutter and I could not ask you to die for a country that you barely know. We want you to be able to have a family and enjoy the life that has been given you.” Mutter got up and put her hand on Fater’s shoulder. “Children, your Fater and I did not come to this decision lightly. We understand all of the feelings you have about leaving. I am apprehensive myself. Your Fater grew up on this very land. It has been in his family for generations. All of the blood, sweat and ashes have been planted here on this farm. But we have a responsibility to you children, to keep you safe and provide for you. Sometimes, these decisions call for things that we do not like and we have to do them anyway. That is what is going to happen in this case.”
“Well, there is really nothing that we can do about it now. You are the parents and have made the decision to move. We can either stay here or fight, while losing the people that we are fighting for or we can move to America and try to start a new life together.” Dieter said. Fater made one last attempt to help us see the light. He explained to us that we did not have to leave our heritage behind but that we can take it with us. As a family we can overcome these hardships, together. We all understood that it was for the best but we all still felt like cowards running away in the shadows of the night.

Part Two: On Our Way
We have less than one week before we set sail for America. I know that it is supposed to be the best thing for us to do, but I can’t stand the thought of leaving my home. The days flew by like seconds and I dreaded the day that we left. Doesn't it always work like that? When you want the days to pass by slowly, they fly by like hawks on the search for food. The day finally came where we had to go. There was no “Bon Voyage” party, saying goodbye to friends or anything. Just a fleeing by night. Saying goodbye to Prussia and never turning back.
The ship was covered with people. People who were leaving for the same reasons we were and hating themselves for it. Mothers with children hanging off their bosoms, and men with some object they could hold on to for a memory. It was all so pathetic. Look at us, fleeing our home because of fear of war. We made our way down to the decks below, which held the sleeping deck. The bunks were small, and the floor looked just as hard. Some people were already sleeping on the floor because the bunks were going fast. The food that was provided was already hard, stale and dry. Some containing parts of mildew and bugs. It was disgusting but it was nourishment. The only thing that we could do at the moment was sleep. So we did.
The next morning, I woke up sick to my stomach. I felt like vomiting and found myself running to the deck and being sick over the edge. When I got back to the sleeping deck, I felt worse. Mutter was up and she looked at me with concern. She tried to give me some water but I could not hold it down and ended up running back up to the deck and vomiting again. When I came back down, Mutter said that I looked as pale as a ghost. Fater told her that I looked a little seasick but that I would be fine. But, by then, my stomach was so tangled up and cramping all I wanted to do was sleep. There was sweat falling off my brow. I laid back down and tried to go back to sleep.
A little bit later, Mutter tried to get me to eat but I threw that up too. Mutter started getting afraid because I couldn't hold anything down, especially water. The sickness lasted for a week and my parents were afraid that I was going to die on the ship. They tried all they knew but no matter what, nothing stayed in my stomach. Finally, a woman on the ship noticed that I was having problems and told my Mutter to give me some beer. This was a success in itself. It calmed down my stomach and it was the only thing that kept me alive the rest of the trip.
A couple of days later, I woke up feeling more alive than I had in weeks. The day was so gorgeous. I went onto deck and the ocean was so calm and collected. It kind of reminded me of the day at the brook. For the first time, I could enjoy the beauty of the ocean. I noticed the foam coming off each wave and how each wave was a part of each other. I was able to see some dolphins and other sea creatures, and just when I was about to yell for Dieter to come and look, there was a shout. Land had been spotted.

Part Three: New York City - Ellis Island
Lady of Light
Lady, oh beautiful lady
Symbol of comfort and joy
People seek you
They kiss away your tears,
They cry at your very sight,
Your miraculous beauty.

They believe in your message
“Life, Liberty, Love”
They gawk at it like an uplifting message
From a preacher to a church congregation.

They come from all over to be knighted
By your majesty’s honor,
To be shielded by the radiance of your torch
You will protect them from the dangers of their previous life.

You are the lady of light
You make us become “The Land of the free”
You shine by the dawn’s early light
“Home of the brave”” rings for your being
You are a symbol of freedom,
Our statue,
Our great symbol of liberty.

Synopsis
Alpha wolf Acksel wakes up one morning in the bed of the one human who was kind to him in school. Now, ten years later, Brynn Mara is snuggled up at his side, smelling like passion and sweet dreams. Even though Acksel has declared that his pack members can mate with humans from now on, he knows that any woman he takes as his mate will have a target on her back. Especially if she’s a fragile human. Deciding it’s better to cut things off than string her along when there’s no hope for a relationship, he leaves without a word and ignores her.

But it doesn’t matter if Acksel acknowledges her or not, because their night of passion has left a permanent reminder of what happens when one drunk wolf forgets protection. Angry, banished wolves from his pack discover Brynn’s secret and decide to use her against Acksel. His worst fears have come true, and the only woman who ever touched his heart is now suffering because of his mistake.

Excerpt
A sharp knocking on the door startled Brynn awake, and she rolled off the couch in surprise.  Her knees slammed into the carpet and she gasped in shock.  She hadn’t meant to fall asleep on the couch.  As she rubbed at her eyes, the knocking on the door continued.  Fixing her blurry gaze on the clock on the television, she saw it was well past midnight.
Standing slowly, she walked to the door.  “Who is it?” she called loudly.  Her mind raced.  Her dad and Mia both had keys to her place and wouldn’t be banging on the door in the middle of the night.
“Open the door.  I just want to see you.”
No.  Way.
There was no possible way on earth that Acksel Moore was banging on her door at this hour.  Or any hour, for that matter.
She flipped on the switch to turn on the porch light and drew in a deep breath.  The lock clicked as she turned it and pulled the door open.  Standing in the harsh light was the most gorgeous man she’d ever known.  The star of every dirty fantasy she’d ever had.
And he looked like someone had shot his puppy.
His gray eyes were red and he reeked of whiskey.  His strong jaw was covered with stubble as if he hadn’t shaved in days.  He leaned heavily on the door frame.
“I just want someone to care.”  His words were raw, his tone rough and full of despair.
Her heart cracked painfully as he slumped forward, too drunk to stay on his feet.  She managed to ease his fall to the floor so he didn’t get hurt.  Leaning over, she stroked his forehead.
“Oh Acksel, I always cared.”

Broken and Screwed (BS #1) by Tijan

Synopsis
Alexandra's older brother died the night he graduated. That day changed everything for her. No longer was she the party girl. No longer did she care about being popular and no longer was her family the happy unit she always thought existed. The only person who could help her heal is the same person who loved her brother as much as she did, his best friend. She only hopes to keep her entire heart from breaking when Jesse will move on, and she knows he will.

She helped him forget, but she was the one person he shouldn't be with because the secrets he knows could shatter everything. They could shatter her.

Review
I needed a stiff drink after reading this one. It seriously took me two days to figure out how to review this book.  Why?  Oh boy, well, because there were some elements that were really good.  I found the scenes between Alex and Jesse pretty compelling, I wanted to know more of their story, but the author had other plans and that's where things took a nosedive.

Instead of focusing on what made this couple so tragically perfect, or wrong for each other, depending on how you see things, we're treated to a smorgasbord of trivialities, most of which are rather irrelevant.  I found myself skimming through scene after scene, pausing only to read if something looked noteworthy.  There was no real depth to these elements, instead we're bombarded with morose whimpering from Alex who needs Jesse for some vague reason pertaining to her dead brother.  Jesse's not particularly nice to her, though there's clearly something going on in his cerebral cortex that we're not made privy to, EVER.  Honestly, the book's a bit bi-polar.  In one moment, I was like "YES, we're finally getting somewhere!" and in the next I'm skimming through seemingly endless drivel.  I guess these drawn out scenes were supposed to make me feel something for Alex and her friends.  They didn't.  Sure, Angie (her bff) seemed okay enough, though she was very vanilla.  Marissa was a straight up slutbag man-stealer.  Aside from that, I got nothing from them, hence the skimming.  Peripheral characters should either add to the plot or the character development.  These characters did neither.  In fact, they detracted from the story altogether.  Every time Angie, Marissa or Eric stepped onto the page I sighed, read a few paragraphs and started the skim.  Ironically, they made Alex less interesting and made what could have been a fascinating story meh-worthy.

Jesse at least seemed interesting, though his scenes were few and far between.  And then he up and leaves for college, ostensibly leaving the story for long periods of time.  But clearly there's a mystery there and, yes, I actually do want to know what it is, which I guess says something.  But here's what it says: Clearly this entire book is a setup for book two.  Sadly, now that I got suckered in, I may in fact read the next book just to find out, but am wary that it will be more of the same.  But seriously, this entire book is Alex silently professing her love for Jesse.  She drops her panties at the mere hint of him and immediately mopes that he's being an asshat again.  So she's depressed, yes, I get it.  But an entire novel's worth of moping?  Stick a fork in me, I'm done.

Clearly I'm in the minority when it comes to this book.  Going back and reading some of the five star reviews on Goodreads made me question if I'd read the same thing.  But what would have made it more impactful to me is if the author spent a fraction of her time getting me acquainted with the peripheral characters, most of whom are gone by the end of the novel, and more time on peeling back the layers of grief and exploring how Jesse fits into the mosaic of that grief.  That seemed to be the crux of the novel when I went in, only we never got even close to touching on it.  Again, it's clear that was done as a setup for the next story, but, honestly, that means I wasted a whole night reading a bunch of crap that has no bearing on the next installment.  Not to beat a dead horse here, but by the end of the novel, Alex's parents are gone, Angie has moved on to college, Alex and Marissa are no longer friends and Eric has left the building.  What the eff?  Why did I spend seventy percent of this novel with a bunch of characters you planned to throw away?  They didn't add anything, they're not coming back in book two, so what the hell dude?

When I was done, I felt like: What the hell did I spend my night reading? If you were never planning to answer a single question or delve into these character's lives why bother dragging it out?  Seriously, you could have cut half the crap in this novel, added it to the next and simply been done with the whole thing.  I bet it would have made for a much better read.  I don't have time to waste, I have stuff on my DVR I need to watch.  Oh, yeah, and by the way, there's a cliffhanger ending.  And to be perfectly frank, it made little sense to me.  Um, so what, now she's crazy?  For reals?  That's what you're going with?

Forever My Girl (The Beaumont Series #1) by Heidi McLaughlin

Synopsis
I was never supposed to be a rock star. I had my life all planned out for me. Play football in college. Go to the NFL. Marry my high school sweetheart and live happily ever after.
I broke both our hearts that day when I told her I was leaving. I was young. I made the right decision for me, but the wrong decision for us. I’ve poured my soul into my music, but I’ve never forgotten her. Her smell, her smile.
And now I’m going back.
After ten years.
I hope I can explain that after all this time.
I still want her to be my forever girl

Review
Here's my tell: when I really love a book, my reviews are long because I want to recapture every moment in an effort to convince you, the reader, to take a chance and roll the dice.  Here's my other tell: when I really hate a book, my reviews tend to be really long because I feel I owe it to you, the reader, to explain exactly what went wrong.  I feel that's really the only way to be fair.  My last tell: when you read a short review from me, it's probably because I neither loved nor hated the book and in all likelihood it's not something I'd actively encourage you to read.

So, as far as Forever My Girl is concerned, it was just okay.  If we had a "meh" shelf, that's where this would be shelved.  It was neither a distater nor a fail, but it was also nothing special, just something kind of in the middle and completely unmemorable.

I think my major grievance would have to be the confusion I felt toward the characters.  Jojo (god, I hate that nickname) was all over the place and I felt that maybe the author couldn't pin down exactly what she wanted from this character.  In one minute Jojo (bleck!) would profess that Liam always had her heart, and in the next she'd refer to him as someone she hadn't loved in years.  If what this was meant to do was to show confusion on the part of the characters' mind, then it was a fail.  I also thought that what happened with her boyfriend Nick was creepy.  If you're done with a relationship, be done with it.  If you're not, but are confused, be truthful about it.  Again, it was another situation that made me dislike the heroine.  Then, the author kind of cheated (yeah, that's sort of a big deal for me) and had Nick run off to Africa.  Huh?  Okay, so you were looking for an easy exit for this character but come on, really?  Never, not once was his departure from this story ever addressed.  Nick raised your kid, was his father for all intents and purposes, and then you never speak of him again?  Little Noah's gonna need some therapy when he gets older, that's all I'm saying.

Liam was at least more consistent and I did appreciate that he was able to man up and take responsibility.  I thought it was kind of stupid that he had such little control over his life that he didn't know he had a kid for ten years.  Sounds mildly far fetched to me but what the hell do I know, I'm no rockstar.  I guess it could happen.  Seems unlikely that nobody in the media would have picked up on this little jewel over time.  In this day and age I think I know more about Beyonce than I do my own parents.  Seriously.

There's not enough meat in this book to warrant going on to the next installment.  I really didn't have much interest in those characters anyway and since Liam and Jojo (ugh) had their HEA, I'm all set.

Review:
* The following review is frank and contains frank language.  If you're easily offended, this may not be the review for you. *

Why did I do this to myself?  I knew going in it would be a problem and I plowed right on ahead and did it anyway. I should have run away screaming when my friend lent this to me.  I should have listened to that little voice inside my head telling me... NO.

Sadly, I did not.

To me this book was merely a money-making venture.  Seriously, this series could have very easily been completed with an epilogue.  It would have been nice actually if the author had done this, as many others do, and offered it to her fans for free.  Except then Abbi Glines wouldn't have had the opportunity to hook you on her other books.  Like those she's very obviously planned for Grant and Woods.  See, here's the thing, a huge component of this novel is dedicated to other characters and setting up their own stories.  Entire chapters are dedicated to completely irrelevant story arcs.  Listen, if I find Grant or Woods so interesting I'll read their stories, I don't need or want you taking away from other characters to push your agenda.  It pisses me off and makes me not give one iota of a crap about any of it.  It's manipulation and I abhor it.

To make matters worse, and to further solidify my point, the author had the balls to throw an advertisement into the middle of a chapter.  Really, I shit you not.  Right there in the wedding scene, she actually interrupts it to direct the reader to buy Rush Finlay's song on iTunes.  What?  After turning this entire novel into a sales pitch for your other books you have the cojones to try to sell me even more stuff?

Aside from that nonsense there is little in the way of actual plot in this installment.  It's really just an excuse to watch Rush and Blaire play house and engage in the simple pleasantries of pre-marital bliss.  I guess if you're into that, then go for it, 'cause that's what you're gonna get.  Yes, there's drama when Nan busts back on the scene but honestly, I hate her so much at this point I wanted to skip those scenes entirely so they added nothing of consequence.  Her presence only made me want to beat myself over the head with something blunt and heavy.

Yeah, there's some other stuff that comes up, nothing earth-shattering or important, and nothing that truly added anything to the story as a whole.  It was merely filler.  Blaire reunites with her dad and finds out she has a long lost brother. Yippee. But we don't actually get to spend any time with this newly found brother so why on earth would we care that he was introduced in the first place.  Dude wasn't even invited to the wedding, at least not that I know of.  It's almost like he was never there to begin with so why did we even need to bear witness to this revelation?

Back to Nan.  Oh how I hate Nan.  And, aside from hating her, I wanted to punch Rush in the face every time he ran after her.  I mean, come on, really?  Are we really rehashing that shoddy story arc again?  Didn't we suffer enough Nan in the last book?  I guess not.  I'd thought perhaps Nan had learned a life lesson almost getting killed and all that, sadly that seemed to only amp up her bitch-o-meter.  It honestly got to the point in this book where the whole Nan/Rush relationship felt awfully incestuous.  And to make matters worse, the bitch is even nastier than before.  And Rush is just as big an ass, chasing her narrow ass all over L.A. while she acts like a fucktwat.  And that's only when she's not screaming at Blaire and Harlow about how they've stolen everything from her and they're evil incarnate. Bitch please. Get a clue, no one cares.  You suck.  Please die.

So, yeah, this was an epic waste of time.  There were more grammatical mistakes than I could keep track of and I found myself wincing a lot at the sentence structure.  Not. Good.  So, I think it's best if Abbi Glines and I part ways at this point.  I'm pretty sure I'm never going to get her, and clearly, as a reader, she doesn't get me.  But that's fine, she has tons of fans and my absence won't make a dent.

Farewell.  I'm out.

Review:
What the hell did I just read?  And did I get a different version from everyone else?  I must have, because that's the only explanation I can come up with as to why the bevy of five star ratings on Goodreads.

Let me be clear, I really, really liked the first book.  Even gave it four stars on Goodreads.  It was interesting and sweet and pretty well written.  But this one?  Not so much.  And saying that is such a huge bummer I can't even begin to explain.  I was dying to read all about Jake, had been salivating ever since it was announced there'd be a companion novel.  And make no mistake, this is a companion novel.  If you're even thinking about reading this without having read the first, I suggest you back away slowly.  There are references to scenes and background in this book that will only make sense if you've read the first so don't even bother to begin here.  The sad part is, I totally recommend reading that first book with the caveat that you NOT read this one.

What made the first book great was that Jake was a total mystery.  It was left to the reader to fill in the blanks.  Unfortunately, now that the author has chosen to fill them in, I like Jake far less than I originally did.  The man I had originally thought to be wrought with conflict and fear, felt more like a narcissistic ass to me after finishing this novel.  No, I didn't lose all compassion and empathy for him, his struggles during those flashback scenes with his shrink were the best in the book and totally revealed someone struggling to reclaim themselves.  However, the way with which he treated Evie and his justifications for being so deceptive were inexcusable.  Point blank: I wish this book had never been written as it now detracts from the original.  You can't, after all, un-ring a bell.

Additionally, it seemed as though this particular novel was cranked out too quickly.  It needed a far better edit.  There were so many issues, I gave up tracking them all.  One word of advice to the author: Stay away from the Italics.  They are not your friend.  There were flow issues, grammatical problems and lots of structural issues.  So much so that they were distracting.  But the biggest issue?  This novel did not pack the punch the first novel did.  Perhaps this is due to the fact that the reason the first book was so good was due to the mystery of Jake.  Knowing the tell from the gate may have lessened its overall impact.  But I think that this novel just tried to do too many things.  It seems that the author wanted to fully reveal Jake to the reader, except it was too, too much.  Throughout the book I found myself rewriting scenes and shaking my head.  There were entire chunks that I felt should have been omitted and would have allowed the story to flow more naturally.  It was a long, long read with far too much information.  Really, I don't need to know every minute detail.  As a matter of fact, it's far more interesting if you leave certain things to the imagination.  Sadly, this took a character I really liked and turned him into someone I barely tolerated.

Thankfully, Evie was still Evie, so I guess that salvaged some of what I remember being so awesome about the first novel.  However, my mind is now clouded in a haze of confusion about Jake.  I still want to love him, still care for his struggles, but I also want to kick him in the nuts.  Does that make any sense?  I think not.  I'm disappointed.  More so, I'm now unable to reclaim something I love because it was irrevocably changed and it can never be what it once was.  Sad, but there it is.
