Author Lowdown with Michelle Fox

Who is your favourite author?
This question is too hard. I can’t handle it! I love the early Anita Blake books by Laurel K. Hamilton. Diana Gabaldon. Celia Kyle makes weres really howl and lets the fur fly!  My favourite ‘classic’ author is Moliere who is entirely underappreciated in the modern era (in my opinion). I made a point of visiting his grave when I was in Paris.

How did you start you writing career?
I ‘wrote’ a ballet when I was ten, and choreographed it, too! (Note: I was a lousy ballet dancer. Kind of like a hippo missing legs.) From there, I just kept going. Then my family and several authority figures said ‘there’s no money in writing’ and discouraged me from writing. I didn’t stop listening to them until I was in my 20s when I decided to write what I wanted to read because I couldn’t find enough books at the bookstore. So the moral is, don’t listen to people when it comes to art! They’re usually wrong!

Which character was the hardest to write and why?
Umm, all of them! My heroes tend to be really inaccessible. They don’t like to tell me what they’re thinking. It is never easy! I remember once I had this vampire hero who was supposed to be all hot and sexy and very into the heroine. He kept running away and I was like ‘wait, come back, you’re going to have hot sex! It’ll be awesome, I promise!’ He wasn’t impressed so I’m still chasing him. That story isn’t even close to done! Maybe I’ll add in some bdsm and tie him up!

Why did you choose to write romance? Favourite style to write?
My grandmother read romance by the bucketful and introduced me to the genre. When I visited her as a kid, I would read them as well. So romance is a natural fit, but I also really enjoy writing Urban Fantasy. My favourite style to write changes as I evolve as a writer. I started out loving sassy first person narrative, but now I have a better appreciation for third POV.

If you weren’t an author, what would you have ended up doing?
I don’t know! All I can tell you is what I did before which was international business and hazmat global logistics. Oh yeah, you know that was sexy!

Do you have any rituals/habits when you write?
Does procrastination count? Because I’m good at that. Also, eating nutella off a spoon while staring at the screen.
(Amanda - OMG! I love Nutella on a spoon!! Kindred spirits!)

What would be the weirdest one?
Probably the nutella.  Oh, and once I googled nutella and studied their supply chain. They have a factory in Russia and source ingredients globally FYI.

Your house is burning and you can grab five things - what would you grab? (people and pets are already out!)
My jewelry (I have a big collection of vintage costume stuff). Computers. My signed sunflower print by Simon Bull. My little Dia de los Muertos art collection. My mermaid paintings. I love art and have quite a bit of original stuff.

What embarrassing item would you let burn?!
All the embarrassing stuff is in my head, so I’m good. I’m no amateur! Any physical evidence was destroyed a looooong time ago.

What is on your current and upcoming release schedule?
Right now, I’m gearing up to release First Moon in February. It’s a werewolf romance. Basically, what if you were about to become a werewolf and had absolutely no idea? That question intrigued me, and next thing I knew, I’d written a novel. It’s set in Northern Michigan in the Traverse City area, a spot we’ve visited quite a bit for family vacations.

The last installment of my Burlesque! Serial will be coming out soon. It’s international intrigue mixed with magic (magician, not witch) and striptease.

Where are your books available?
My books are available on Amazon, Barnes andNoble, GooglePlay, Kobo and I’m working on iTunes.

  1. Great interview. I love hearing the little human things we all share. Michelle is a down to earth, call 'em as I see 'em kind of gal. Keep those books coming!

*not Nutella but Jif Chocolate Whips does it for me. It is not allowed in my home anymore. I might as well just glue the jar to my hips... :)
