The Lion's Prey (Chimera Chronicles #4) by Karin Shah

32705062

Amazon Synopsis:
On the run . . .

Attempting to flee from a bank robbery he was blackmailed into, Chimera-shifter and former Army Ranger Tyler Gunn is a desperate man. Reeling from what he believes is the death of his twin, he knows he can’t control his lion if he’s arrested and he fears killing innocent people. His only hope is to get somewhere far away, where he can safely surrender to the feral side that has gnawed away at his humanity and is now a whisker away from locking him in his lion, forever.

Reporter Zara Coventry is having a bad day. Her feet hurt, her mom is pressuring her to move back to California, her co-worker has snaked a story out from under her, and worst of all, she hasn’t had a date in so long, the mere picture of one of the escaped twins from the bank gets her all hot and bothered. What the hell is that all about? Then a tall stranger shields her from an explosion and things go completely downhill.

When Zara recognizes Ty, he has no choice. He must take her hostage. Too many lives are at stake. The plan is to release her as soon as it’s safe, but his lion is revealed and despite her fear, Zara smells the story of a lifetime. Their fates are not their own, however. A major snowstorm strands them in a tiny conservative village in the Ozarks and they are forced to pretend to be husband and wife.

Trapped together, Zara has to remind herself pretty much every time she looks at him that the sexy shapeshifter is a criminal. And though Ty knows she’s his mate, he believes he's too unstable to give in to the burning desire he feels when she’s near.

But forbidden longing and the FBI are not the only threats. The cartel has lost an airplane in the storm and they’ll do anything to get their product back. Even kill.

My Review:
Page turning. I use that phrase a lot when talking about Karin Shah’s books. The action is non-stop and really raises your heartbeat in a few spots. But Shah’s characters are real, at least in an emotional sense, not just cardboard cutout deliverers of mayhem. You care about them. All of this is why Karin Shah is on my ‘must buy’ list…

This book is a direct sequel of Lion’s Share, book three in this series. [If you haven’t read it yet, I really recommend reading it first.] In Lion’s Share the brothers split up in the last chapter and are supposed to meet at the heroine’s home. It doesn’t happen. In Lion’s Prey we find out why, and what happened then…

You’ve got to love the Gunn brothers, they sure know how to show a girl a good time. Con, the hero of book three, meets his mate when he takes her hostage during a bank robbery – and she just happens to be an FBI agent no less. Ty, the hero of this book kidnaps the reporter covering the bank robbery/hostage situation – and she turns out to be HIS mate.

The storyline covers their escape including blizzard conditions, an ‘armed and extremely dangerous’ dragnet, drug dealers, magic users, and of course tons of soul searching while the hero and heroine find their way to each other.

I really like the whole chimera concept. I mean they’re capable of shapeshifting into a lion or shapeshifting into a dragon – how could you not love that? Wrap this all in an extremely hot alpha male with protective instincts and oh my! No make that triple ‘oh mys!’…

The Lion's Prey
There’s a teaser for the next book, The Dragon’s Flame, at the end and it sounds great as well.

An ARC of this book was provided to me in exchange for an honest review.

The witch who cried wolf by Sarah Makela

Mia is a witch that doesn't practice her powers so that makes her powers not very strong. She has been keeping her powers a secret from her family and friends. Her brother gets her to pick up his mate Ethan from the airport whom she has been lusting after for years.  While at the airport Mia and Ethan are attacked by a werewolf and Mia uses her powers exposing her to Ethan. Mia then has to tell Ethan that he could become a werewolf. Finally the feelings that Mia thought were only on her side turn out to be more than one sided.
Mia and Ethan get dragged into the world of the werewolves that neither of them they knew anything about. Ethan is given a chance to learn what he is going to become from the alphas son.
Not wanting to give any spoilers I’m leaving it at this. It is a beautiful love story of two people who want to deny their love as they feel that is the right thing to do. Finally giving into what is meant to be.
I received this arc for my honest review and this is my honest review.

REVIEW!!! The Spell of Summer (Once Twice Thrice #1) by Dianna Hardy

The Spell of Summer (Once Times Thrice, #1)

BUY NOW

The spell of summer (once trice thrice) by Dianna Hardy

Dianna Hardy’s Spell of Summer proves that magic does exists and that no matter what if you are meant to be together then you will be. Regardless of how much time passes if you are meant to be it will be.
When Meredith says another man’s name at the alter on her wedding day her fiancee Michael decides that they need some time apart to reassess their commitment to each other. Even though she is upset by this Meredith goes along with his wishes and goes back to her home town. A place she hasn't been since she was 16 when she left with her mother to make a new start in London. On her last night their Meredith meets Jamie when he saves her life; he then shows her the best night of her life.
Even though Meredith and Jamie went their separate ways and they had lives of their own 13 years latter fate shows them what was meant to be. It is not all smooth sailing and what about Michael? With a little bit of magic anything is possible!
Spell of summer is a wonderfully written book and I found it enthralling. It is nice to let some magic into my life and reminds us to let some” magic” into our own lives. A lovely romance was a pleasure to read this ARC for my honest review. Would recommend this to anyone.

REVIEW! Sleight of Hand I & II by Reese Galloway

Sleight of Hand, books 1-Private Performance & 2-Repeat Performance by Reese Galloway
***For covers and buy links, please follow this link to the blog tour post!***

Synopsis - Private Performance
Ellaine Greene has simple desires. She just wants to do her best as the event coordinator for the local aquarium, to support environmental conservation efforts, and to keep immature man-children out of her life.
So when a major donor to the aquarium demands Ellaine find a magician for her granddaughter's birthday party, all she can imagine is a long line of card chuckers and coin flippers wearing cheesy sequined vests.
Instead, she gets Xander Hollatz, a sophisticated, powerful man in a crisp suit, with nimble fingers and a warm smile.
He's the man for the job, no doubt. And, to her surprise, she realizes he might be the man for her, too. Will she let her doubts get in the way of their feelings for each other?
And when everything goes wrong at the birthday party, will he be able to perform a miracle to save the day?

Sleight of Hand #1: Private Performance is a 17,000-word novella, introducing readers to Ellaine and Xander's passionate and tender romance, to the fascinating wildlife inhabiting the aquarium, and to the mysterious world of professional magicians.

Synopsis - Repeat Performance
Ellaine Greene has a new man in her life, the famous magician Xander Hollatz. He's ripped, kind, and mysterious -- nothing like her ex-husband. He has even volunteered to perform at her aquarium's annual fundraising gala. But she's still having trouble leaving the past behind, especially when her ex shows up to beg for money.
Before the new couple knows it, someone's trying to break into Xander's mansion to steal the secrets of his many famous illusions. Ellaine's ex becomes their prime suspect. But maybe it's actually the up-and-coming street magician they've befriended. Or maybe it's even someone from Xander's mysterious past.
Whoever the thief is, if he uncovers and reveals the secret of Xander's newest illusion for the fundraiser, the event will be a disaster. Ellaine may lose her job.
And there's a still greater question: Is this feeling they share together just lust -- or is it something more?

Find out in this 74,000-word book, the second volume in the Sleight of Hand series.

Review
Take a woman with a love of the ocean who works in an aquarium and a man who retired from being a magician and put them together with the help of an enthusiastic assistant.

Ellaine Greene doesn't have the highest self esteem (or the cleanest apartments!) and seriously doubts herself and her powers of attraction when she meets the man from her dreams, Xander Hollandz. Her ever-so-helpful assitant sets them up, knowing Ellaine needs another magician for birthday parties at the aquarium and Xander needs a new lease on life.

Xander Hollandz's life has fallen almost into a state of no return when he's introduced to Ellaine. Despite her rejection of him the first time, they do get to know each other and sparks fly. He's battling some pretty fierce demons of his own and gradually comes clean about them all, even the one he thinks she'll leave him because of. His self-esteem isn't actually much higher than Ellaine's, but he's got a firm idea of what he wants--her--and does what he needs to, to hide his secrets from her until he's compelled to reveal them to her, one at a time.

I really enjoyed both of these books. The novella is a great introduction to the couple and you can't really get the full enjoyment out of the second book without the first. The world of magic and illusion made my feel a little like a kid again and I really wanted to see the tricks in real life instead of just reading about them. I got a feel for the characters and their issues. I felt sorry for the young volunteer whose mother is an overbearing arse without a clue what teenagers need to know about the real world. I got to know more than just the two main characters, Ellaine and Xander, I got to know Kaylee and Brissa, too, as well as Xander's young apprentice, Shay, who helps Ellaine out of a pickle outside a nightclub.
Thoroughly enjoyable reads and well worth the time to do so. Thumbs up to Reese Galloway and these magical books!

COVER REVEAL!! Disgraced by Dianna Hardy

Disgraced
(Book one of the Saving Eve trilogy.)

Amid long, wild grass, a snake slithers, hidden.
Hidden until a man opens his eyes…

Awaking with amnesia in St Mary's Hospital, after a near-fatal freak accident, he is known only as Luc. With the help of Evie Gold, the kind, young woman who found him, he starts a new life – a second chance, a clean slate.

A bond burgeons between them.

But disturbing dreams of dark deeds become waking recountings. His new life crumbles as Luc finds himself drawn to London's most depraved places, without understanding why. Inside him, a blackness is uncoiling – seductive, familiar and dangerously provocative.

An ancient craving stirs; an old addiction rises.

And suddenly, Luc find himself in a fight for redemption, never knowing from what until each new memory surfaces. But his next memory might just be his undoing, for it's a memory of Evie.

BLOG TOUR, GIVEAWAY & NEW RELEASE!! The Spell of Summer by Dianna Hardy

Review
Holy moly. I'm not sure just how many tissues I went through reading this book but once I got past page 90, I was a goner.
Well written, emotional, with wonderful characters and a hint of magic. You'll definitely love Jamie and Merri too. Usually, a book this length would take me 3 nights (on average) to proofread. This one took me two. I was that involved in the world of the story, it took me looking at the time on the laptop to realise it was past 3am. It wasn't until I turned it off, that my eyes started to droop - as long as that file was open, so were my eyes and they were quite content to read. Mind you, two nights of past 3am ... I was kinda stuffed the next morning! Dianna sets up the 'what if/what happened?' well, and you'll keep reading just to find out what the hints are all about. Then, when you get a big reveal ... grab tissues. You'll need them. In fact, keep the box and a rubbish bin handy!

This story is written from multiple POV's, which I love, as it gives you more to delve into. We see the world through the eyes of: Merri, Jamie, Candy (Merri's BFF), Pippa (Jamie's sister), Michael, Penny (Merri's mum) and Lesley.
Naturally, you'll have to read the book to find out who all these people are! I'm really hoping this book is a success, because I'd love to see another book in this series take flight. We've already been introduced to, and have delved into the lives of, these characters and I for one would like to find out what the hell happens to everyone else!!

Stop 2: RELEASE DAY!

So, I heard from the blog boss that it was Kink Month over here, and I scoured through my just-released-today-book (plug! plug!) looking for the sexy to share. I’m notorious for giving away some kind of plot or character revelation in my sex scenes, so this is never an easy task for me! But I did manage to find this little excerpt J

Excerpt
He anchored as close as he could to the shore of a small, sandy cove, glad that it was as peaceful and undisturbed as he remembered it. No one ever came here because there was no path down to the beach – you could only reach it by boat.

Merri was sitting, leaning back against the side of the boat; huge, maroon sunglasses on, enjoying the sun, having now lathered herself in factor thirty.

Jamie smiled at the sight. He was so fucking gone, but then he always had been with her. “Ready for lunch?”

She lazily turned her head towards him.

All he could see of her was her small smile for the shades, but he suddenly felt like a deer caught in headlights.

“Does that mean I have to get up?”

“We could eat on the boat, but I thought we might head into the cove. We’ll have to wade through some water though – I can’t take her any closer in because of the rocks.”

She pulled herself up, slowly, still smiling.

What’s with her?

“Guess the dress needs to come off then.”

God, yes.

“It’s only about waist-deep. I don’t think—” And then he didn’t think at all. All words flew right out of his head as yellow cotton went over blonde hair revealing…

Oh, Christ…

KINKY SPOTLIGHT - Jennifer James #4

NYMPHS OF NEW YORK VOLUME ONE
Poseidon, god of the sea, proclaims that any nymph from his harem who wishes to search out a mate may do so.
However, she only has three days to find someone he deems worthy.
Welcome to the world of the Nymphs of New York.

WET FOR THE TITAN
It's never good to piss off a goddess, even a minor one...
Telesto has been reasonably content as a member of Poseidon's harem, until he came along and ripped her free of her moorings, setting her adrift without gravity to keep her feet on the ground. She hadn't been looking for love, a relationship, or anything but a private room to retreat to in the castle. Now her fury has been unleashed, and she has no problem bringing an arrogant Titan back to Earth.
He's going to claim his mate whether she likes it or not...

Pyroeis has long been a wanderer, and a lucky hand of cards has gifted him with the one thing he always wanted, at the expense of what he never knew he needed. He'll travel to the ends of the universe if he must to convince Telly she belongs with him, and only him. Nothing will stand in his way, no creature, no matter how powerful, can stop this Titan from claiming his mate.

ROCK HARD AND WET
She’s a nymph on a mission.
Callianira, curvy, vivacious, and the life of the party at every orgy, has fallen prey to a depression no amount of hot lovin’ can shake. Her best friend Petra has a plan: a trip to New York City to find mates who can handle a couple of horny nymphs for a lifetime of hot sex and soul deep love.
Callie’s not buying the sales pitch Petra is hawking, but goes along for the ride. She figures she can find a male or two who won’t mind acting as multiple orgasm donors.
He’s sexy, rock hard, and has just been released from a five hundred year prison sentence.
Outcast from the Aerie of New York, grotesque Theo’s focused on guarding the humans of Brooklyn and keeping his twin Logan out of trouble. When gorgeous females who smell like salt water and sex invade his territory, his careful plan for regaining entrance to the secular aerie gets ripped out to sea.
They’re completely wrong for each other.
Callie’s magic is tied to the ocean.
Theo can’t swim.
Callie is carefree, sweet, and finds joy in bending the rules.
Theo toes the line and is ever vigilant.
He’ll sink to the bottom of the ocean, and she’ll fly above it to claim their happily ever after.

Kiss that Frog - A Modern Fairy Tale by Cate Rowan

Kiss That Frog: A Modern Fairy Tale

Purchase Links
Amazon US          Amazon UK          Amazon AU

Synopsis
A cynical Los Angeles artist reluctantly pet-sits her young niece's frog and discovers magic in the terrarium - in the form of a sexy enchanted prince.

Review
What a delightful little tale! I was looking for something short to fill a gap in my afternoon before picking kids up and came across this in my Kindle. I'm so glad I did too :)
It's a nice gap filler novelette - only 45 pages and 12K words - but a wonderful way to spend part of an afternoon.
Sofia is an artist who has closed herself off to the world and particularly men. Her paintings are detailed in their landscapes with people blurry and almost non-existent. Her seven-year-old niece needs her frog pet-sat while she's on holidays. Little does she know, her conversations with the frog and an innocent kiss to his head will turn her world around and break the walls around her heart.
Alexander is a prince from two-hundred years ago who didn't want to marry a girl with the personality of a fence post (loved that description!) and is rewarded for his honesty by being transformed into a frog by her mother, a witch. He wants his princess to one with wit and personality. After two centuries as a frog, he finally finds his princess.
Fill a gap in your day and grab this book. It's sweet and short and you'll love the mini escape from reality to enjoy some magic.

From This Day Forward (Dragon Shifters of Derkesthai Academy #2) by Mackenzie Lucas

From This Day Forward: Dragon Shifters of Derkesthai Academy

OK, they had me at ‘dragon shifter’. I love dragon shifter stories and this one did not disappoint, although there is a definite twist to this author’s interpretation. There is lots more magic involved for one thing.

The hero is Noah, an ice dragon shifter, who has spent most of his married life as a Special Forces soldier. The reason? By Council ruling male dragons cannot live with their families until the youngest child reaches five… And Noah and his wife, April, have three stair step daughters so they’ve been constrained to short visits for nine of the ten years of their marriage. But their youngest is five now and April intends to convince her husband to stay home from now on…

April is an interesting character in her own right. She is human but comes from a LONG line of seers and oracles. They practice geomancy – not so much the sudden vision in the head but the interpretation of physical clues and omens. And right now April is in denial because the portents are building up, way up, like disaster in the making up, and she really doesn’t want to know.

Noah and April love each other deeply. She wants him home to have a father for her children and a husband for herself. He isn’t sure he can leave the adrenaline-drenched world of Special Forces. Then he is attacked, both magically and mundanely, and his family is threatened. Suddenly he knows what’s important and what’s not.

There are definite threads laid down for future books. Although this story is safely resolved, it’s obvious there are more plots, more intrigues and more mayhem on the way.

Based on publication date, it appears that To Have & To Hold is the first book in the series. I haven’t read it and am unsure if there is a series arc but this one seemed to function well as a stand-alone.

Wilted (The Witching Pen series, #0.5)
Wilted
(This story takes place ten years before the events of The Witching Pen.)

Fifteen-year-old Elena hides her magical abilities from everyone, except her best friend, Karl. Inseparable since they were very young, they've always shared everything together, including the darkest parts of their lives.

Elena's beginning to realise that her feelings for Karl are growing into something more. But her mother's about to drop a bombshell on her – one that will change the course of her life, and heart, forever.

PUBLISHERS NOTES:

This UK-based story is suitable for YA readers, but it should be noted that The Witching Pen series series is aimed at adult readers.

For fans of the series, this story includes two parts of Elena's past that were made reference to in The Witching Pen: 1) The moment that Karl turns up on Elena's doorstep having been beaten and 'jumped on' by his father and 2) "The Sex Talk" between Elena and her mother.

The Witching Pen (The Witching Pen series, #1)
The Witching Pen
It's hard being the most powerful witch on the planet. It's even harder when you're a twenty-five year old virgin who'll lose all of that power the moment you sleep with someone ... that's why Elena's never slept with her best friend and flatmate, Karl, despite the true feelings they harbour for each other.

Elena's about to discover that there are even more difficult things in life to deal with. One of them comes in the form of a pen she discovers one day, a pen that allows anything she writes to come to pass...

Suddenly, it's not just her powers or her heart that's at stake, but her very soul, as a dream demon with a seductive pull uses the pen to try and turn her away from her reality, and from Karl.

But the pen is just the beginning. Everything Elena has believed in is a lie, and her world is about to fall apart...

The Sands Of Time (The Witching Pen series, #2)
The Sands of Time
Seven days ago, Elizabeth May tried to commit suicide. She was found by Paul, her husband, who took her under his wing and back to their home. But the attempted suicide is not Elizabeth's main problem - Elizabeth can't remember who she is, or a single thing about her life beyond the past week.

Plagued by nightmares about a familiar black panther, and a terrifying snow leopard, she is convinced that the dreams are trying to show her something important, and is determined to regain her memories, one way or another.

Meanwhile, Pueblo - the demon blood-bonded to the witch, Amy - is going insane trying to find her. Amy disappeared one week ago, and it seems not even their bond is strong enough to penetrate whatever magic hides her.

As Pueblo enlists the help of angels and demons alike, Elizabeth begins to piece together parts of her forgotten life. But what she uncovers may just have her wanting to turn away from who she really is ... for good.

The Demon Bride (The Witching Pen series, #3)The Demon Bride
Two thousand and eleven years after the birth of the Failed One, the Witching Pen will be made manifest on Earth by the Great Shanka Witch of the Old Scrolls. By her hand, the Earth will rumble and shatter, and all dimensions will bleed into one.

The true purpose of the Witching Pen has been revealed, and it must be destroyed before an apocalyptic prophecy comes true. There's just one problem -- the Pen is indestructible.

As everyone searches for much needed answers, Elena lays down plans for a radical mission to save her mother from the Shanka's shadow world.

Meanwhile, Mary has finally discovered who she really is, and what that means for the human race.

What Mary doesn't know, is that Gwain has been searching for her for over ten thousand years, and had lost all hope of finding her. Now that he has her, he's faced with an impossible choice: does he save the woman who altered his very existence, or does he sacrifice her to save mankind?

The Last Dragon
The Last Dragon
The Earth is in a state of shock after the apocalypse. The veil between dimensions is no more. Demons and fallen angels walk among humans, and everyone is trying to find their place in the new world - Morgan le Fey's world.

But the fairy queen finds herself cemented within humanity and struggling with human emotions, and her right-hand-man, Lucifer, has secrets which are causing fissions among every race.

Meanwhile, Karl and Elena struggle with their powers, Katarra delivers an important message, and two men will stop at nothing to protect their unborn child - the Messiah of the New Age - and the woman they love.

Far to the east, the fallen Archangel Michael is fighting for the one he holds above all others.

The Last Dragon is about to rise and seal everyone's future, which depends solely on its survival ... or its extinction.

Review
OMG! This is a fantastic series! So great in fact, I bought it twice.
I have the set individually on my Kobo app and when Dianna changed the covers (to the above - aren't they just great?!) and bundled it for .99c/77p/$1.13, I couldn't help myself, I bought it again for my Kindle app.

As the synopses above tell you, Wilted was written for YA while the rest isn't - it's very much adult and rather steamy. The Last Dragon isn't classified the same (it's fantasy - there's not really any steam unless you count the apocalypse) and in some places it won't be classed as book 4.
But it is. Most definitely Book 4. The series needs this fourth book, no matter the fantasy tag, to wrap the series up and tell you what the hell is going on. You may also need a box of tissues by your side for books 3 & 4 - I certainly did.
I'd be thrilled if any of the secondary characters had their stories told at any stage. It'd be nice to get inside the heads of the fallen angels.

A must-add to your TBR.
