Synopsis
Miss Caroline Bristol is reluctant to work for a bachelor but she needs a position, and these former street children touch her heart. While she tends to break any mechanical device she touches, it never occurs to her that she might be something more than human. All she knows is that Merrick is the most dangerously attractive man she's ever met—and out of reach for a mere governess.
When conspiracy threatens to blur the distinction between humans and monsters, Caroline and Merrick must join forces, and the fate of humanity hinges upon their combined skills of steam and sorcery...
Review
Good read - relationship driven plot with some action elements. It has an historical setting [1851] with a touch of magic and a steampunk twist. It comes complete with a lord, a governess, and assorted delightful [and oddly talented] children. No mad wife in the attic but it does have a mechanical dog and vampyres...
A
group of street children help Sir Merrick with his current mission and he
recognizes the oldest boy has the power to become a Knight of the Round Table -
with time and training. So he offers -
but the boy refuses. After all, if he's
gone - what will the other children do?
So Sir Merrick agrees to take them too...
But
what's a bachelor to do with five children, some of them girls? Obviously his once quiet household now needs
a governess. Quickly. Before he goes mad.
Enter
Miss Caroline. Her experiences have led
her to believe that being a governess in a household with males is NOT a good
idea, so she has no intention of accepting the position. Then the pack of wild children invade the
room and steal her heart, along with the tarts, crumpets and tea sandwiches.
Fun
read with a sweet romance.
