Her glare sharpens and she clenches her fists. I’m glad she’s pissed off. I need to see the fire in her to remind myself why I have risked everything bringing her into all of this. Sometimes, I swear she’s more trouble than she’s worth but I didn’t save her all those years ago to let her go now. She’s my family, blood or not. 

“Wallowing in self-pity? Oh, I’m sorry, I’m not completely dead inside like you are. This shit affects me. You… you put all of these things in my head.” 

Losing it, I shout, “You asked for it! I told you that you didn’t want this shit in your head, but you kept demanding to know everything.” Taking a breath, trying to get my anger in check. “Did you want me to lie to you? Let you drag that knife across your wrist? Watch as Mason and Ianna die inside at the loss of your life? You forced my hand. I couldn’t spend every day worrying you would try to kill yourself the moment my back was turned.” 

Why can’t she understand that I did this for her? 

She scoffs, “You can’t keep changing me when I do something you don’t like.” 

“I’m not changing you! I’m fixing you.” Sitting down beside her. “I can’t change the fact that we had a nightmare childhood, but we have grown stronger because of it. You are brave and talented. You are Phoenyx mother fucking Warren, kick ass demigod with more than one power under her belt. You are incredible. Why can’t you see that?”

Taking a deep breath, he pushed open the gate and strode up the path to knock on the front door.

It opened to reveal Jess in her pyjamas. Rob’s gaze dropped to her cleavage, on show from the tight, low-cut top she was wearing, before she wrapped a dressing gown across her chest. Her black hair curled around her face and stuck out in all directions. Dark, long lashes only emphasised her pale skin, as did the dark circles under her eyes. "I thought you were Emma and had forgotten your keys again. If you're looking for Matt, he's not here."

He grinned at her; he couldn't help it, remembering how she'd been that night. Okay, so she had been drunk, but she had still kissed him, even giggled at him. But every time they were alone, she became this ice queen, except he knew it was fake. He just didn't know why yet. 

"Hi, Jess. I'm good, thanks for asking. How are you?" She didn't answer him unless he counted the face she pulled at him. "I'm not looking for Matt, I know, he's not here.”

You think you're having a bad day? While crossing a Spokane street a car tries to run Jordon down and she is saved - at least she thinks she's saved - by a bolt of lightning which transports her to an empty road in the midst of a massive storm. Looking around she sees only spooky woods and a pair of creaking gates guarded by stone gargoyles. Gargoyles who blink at her... Add in the griffin on the lawn battling a banshee, the pooka who tries to carry her off and she knows she's not in Kansas anymore. And that's before she meets the very naked Lord Griffin...

Iron and Hemlock is a short story so it doesn't have the time to develop the depths of character and plot that her novels do. Wisely she spends her time with the main characters - just introducing the other characters with short sketches. I'm sure we'll see more of them in future stories. The plot moves right along giving glimpses of the backstory without overwhelming the reader with details.

Sometimes you get lucky and find a new author. I've read her No Words Alone and When Sparks Fly as well as The White Rabbit and Something Wild This Way Comes. I've enjoyed them all.

Fun read. Hero is a dragonslayer who gets bitten by a dragon - which in this world means he's going to turn into a dragon. His younger brother takes him to 'the woman who studies dragons' in hopes she can help...

King Kei wakes up and finds out he is going to turn into a dragon. He is horrified and plans to suicide - after he's set up his younger brother to take over the kingdom. Lorran talks him into staying while she studies the transition. He doesn't fight very hard because of his overwhelming obsession with Lorran. Then he starts hearing another voice in his head saying 'Mine!' every time he looks at Lorran. He fears he might hurt Lorran so he blows her off and goes back to the castle.

Avoiding spoilers, Lorran is threatened, he turns into a dragon to save her and then flies away. His brother feels he must slay the dragon but Lorran thinks she might have the solution...

There's a lot of Energizer bunny sex but it has an interesting plot, good characters and cute dialog. And the Epilogue [20+ years later] is hysterical! 
**Warning** Tthe heroine has [oral] sex with the hero in dragon form - if that bugs you stay away from these four.
