Kevin sat on the dusty benchtop of one of the toy factory tables, his elbows on his knees, his feet on a tall stool and his chin resting on his palms.
Santa’s Toyshop was dark except for the remnants of a few candles burning. The meagre light caught on the tinsel and baubles hanging high above him, creating an occasional green and red flash in the otherwise dim space.
Christmas was supposed to be a time of giving and family and happiness. All Kevin could think of was how damn lonely it was. He didn’t have any family or any friends, and all the other elves had their own families. Being one of Santa’s Elves wasn’t all sunshine and fucking lollipops like people believed. He snorted. When they believed. Being one of Santa’s Elves with a birth defect was even harder. His was a life of being outcast, of being shunned, and of being made to work in the darkest corner of the workshop.
He was a strange anomaly—an elf born with wings and dumped on the steps of the clock tower in the centre of the compound. Yes, Santa had a compound, often known as a village. Off in the distance, said clock tolled, marking midnight and the start of Christmas day. I wish I wasn’t so alone.
Kevin didn’t realise he was crying until a tear rolled off his cheek and landed on the dirty stool his feet rested on. He stared at the now clean spot, perfectly circular with decorative spikes—the beauty of a droplet landing. He watched as one drop became two, which then became eight. Soon, the place between his curly-toed shoes was clean and wet, emphasising the filth surrounding it. It may have been symbolic that rain was cleansing and tears were purging, but it didn’t actually make him feel any better.

Blurb

Noelle's voice has captivated Alex, and she's become his greatest obsession. Since he hired her to read audiobooks, listening to her is the only thing that makes his lonely world bearable. Thank God she's never seen him. His scars would only scare her away.

Alex has starred in every fantasy Noelle's had since she first heard his voice over the phone, and reading erotica samples to him only fuels her desire. Listening to him on the other end of the phone is the best part of her day, and she's willing to do anything to please him.

On Christmas Eve a storm comes through, sending Noelle in search of her reclusive boss. Once she's at his cabin with no place to go, there's only one way to keep warm.

Warning: This is the sweetest, cheesiest, most Christmassy book ever! It's filled with late-night confessions, dirty deeds, and a lifetime of love. If you love this time of year, I've got some cheer for you!

Snow and Mistletoe Excerpt

“I…uh…” I say, trying to break the silence between us for the second time today. I’m totally getting fired. Hell, I kinda knew that when I popped on my audiobook and my voice wasn’t even on it. As much as I want to ask, I don’t feel like poking the bear he seems to have turned into.

I knew he was the silent broody type, but I didn’t think he bit. Now I’m not so sure. He could rip my heart to shreds with a few harsh words. Maybe this is why I spend so much time with my head in the clouds and my nose in books, dreaming in my own little world. This real-life romance shit is hard and scary.

“Follow me. I’ll show you where you can put your stuff,” he says without looking at me as he heads towards a hallway. It’s as if he wants to shove me into a room as quickly as possible. He won’t even look at me, and a lump starts to form in my throat. Forget it. I can’t do this.

“Maybe I should just…” I turn to grab the door handle, but I remember I don’t have my shoes on so I can’t make as quick of an escape as I’d like. Before I can turn to grab my shoes, big arms shoot out on either side of me, landing on the door. His warm body presses into mine.

“Don’t go.” His words are soft this time, and they tickle my ear. He doesn’t move, and I can’t seem to form any words with him pressed up against me like this. “Just let me show you to your room. You can take a warm bath if you like.”

“Okay.” The fight leaves my body at his deep, sensual voice. My answer comes out breathy, and it takes every muscle in my body to stop myself from leaning into him. I want to rub against him like a cat in heat. I’ve never done anything wanton in my life, but Alex makes me do a lot of things I’ve never done before. Like drive three hours in a snowstorm, pretending it was all about saving my job, when really I’m being a low-key stalker.

Maybe I can just say I’m cold or something if I rub against him. Oh my God, I’m totally trying to cop a feel! My cheeks burn with embarrassment at my own thoughts, but Alex still makes no move to release me. I can’t move until he drops the big arms that are caging me. God, how I wish I was facing the other way and staring into his dark blue eyes. I was so sure they would be brown when I pictured him, but my thoughts didn’t do those eyes justice.

“Don’t try to leave again.” The firmness in his voice is one I know all too well. I am about to tell him I’ll do whatever I want, but feeling him pressed against me banishes any thoughts I have of leaving this cabin. “It’s dark, the snow is falling thick, and the coyotes will be out.”

With that caution, the warmth of his body leaves mine, and I miss it instantly. Sadly, I think I could have stood like that all night and been utterly content. I turn, following him down the long hallway. The cabin is cute. It’s hard to make out much with so few lights on, but all the walls and floors are wooden. It’s rustic and homely and utterly perfect. The place looks like it was plucked right out of some catalogue. It would be the perfect place to spend Christmas.

The thought reminds me that it’s Christmas Eve. I haven’t heard anyone else, but I feel bad, not only for intruding but for possibly putting someone out of a bedroom. “Are we alone?” I’m prying for information, but I’m wondering if a girlfriend or someone like that is going to pop up.

“I’m always alone.” That makes me happy until the words really sink it.

He takes me upstairs, and we pass one door before we stop outside another. He turns the knob and pushes the door open. He half-turns to me, but the light is off, and I still can’t really make out his face. I can tell he has a strong jaw and nose, but seeing so little only makes me long to see more.

“Get some rest. I’m sure it was a long drive.” With that, he turns and heads down the stairs, his big body disappearing into the shadows of the cabin.

I go into the room he told me to take and flip on the nearby lamp. I ignore everything but the bed as I toss my bag onto it and let myself fall into its softness.

I’m always alone.

REVIEW Caribou's Gift by Eve Langlais

Title: Caribou's Gift
Author: Eve Langlais
Expected publication date: December 16th, 2014

Synopsis

Damn it, a man had his pride and a caribou a certain majestic presence, all of which could wind up ruined if he abased himself to play a simple-minded reindeer in the town’s Christmas parade.

No way was he wearing damned tinsel in his antlers.

Like hell was he sporting a red nose and pulling a sleigh.

But he changes his mind when he meets the woman in charge of the event.

Single mom, Crystal, is doing her best to offer her daughter the best Christmas ever. It’s their first in Kodiak Point, and she’s not about to let some vain jerk ruin it for her little girl.

If playing dirty is what it takes…then bring on the Christmas games. As Crystal and Kyle butt heads—and lips—they discover more than goodwill this holiday season. They’re gifted with a second chance at love.

Review

I'm really loving this new series by Eve Langlais. In Kodiak Point, Alaska, a clan of shifter lives together. All kinds of shifters. From bears to mooses (not meece!), walrus to foxes, there are all kinds living there.
Caribou's Gift is a novella in the series, coming after Polar Bared, and takes a more light-hearted look at life in the town.
It's Christmas time and Rudolph is needed for the town's Christmas parade because, sucks for the timing, the usually guy died. How rude and inconvenient! Crystal is new in town and running the parade, Kyle is one of the guys from the military unit we know of from previous books and he just happens to be a caribou shifter...perfect to play Rudolph. Except he says NO!

I love Eve's writing. I have done since the first book I ever read. There's not a book of hers I haven't enjoyed. I'm also blessed to copy edit for her too, which creates fangirl moments each time I get a new manuscript to play with. There's no bias in my reviews though due to that. I genuinely love all her work.
Kodiak Point is a brilliant new series of hers and I can't wait for more. The characters are strong, fiesty and interact really well. Even the 'bad guy' (Gene) has a place here.
Kyle is a computer wizz and wins the heart of Crystal's daughter, who has issues with strangers and men in particular. He wins her over and eventually her mum, too. A wonderful Christmassy novella for the silly season and a fab edition to the Kodiak Point family!

REVIEW - A Christmas to Remember - A Christmas Anthology by by Jill Shalvis, Kristen Ashley, Hope Ramsay, Molly Cannon, and Marilyn Pappano

20454653

Kristen Ashley, Every Year: Holidays don't come easy for Shy and his brother, Landon. But with the magic of Christmas, along with a little help from Tabby and her family, the Cage brothers are about to get the gift of a lifetime . . .

Hope Ramsay, Silent Night: Down on her luck and evicted from her apartment, single mother Maryanne hopes to start over in Last Chance. Molly Cannon, Have Yourself a Messy Little Christmas: Lincoln is a bachelor who's set in his ways-until a professional organizer dressed up as Mrs. Claus changes his life, one tip at a time. . .

Marilyn Pappano, A Family for Christmas: War widow Ilena doesn't mind spending Christmas alone. But when a new doctor blows into town with the winter wind, will she get her secret Christmas wish?

Review
A small-town-Christmas themed anthology with the stories slotting into the each of the author’s existing series. It's kind of like those round tins of Christmas cookies, each one is a little different but all good!

I’m a big Jill Shalvis fan, and a long-time follower of the Lucky Harbor series. Fortunately for me her ‘Dream a Little Dream’ [Lucky Harbor series] is the first story so I didn’t have long to wait. Take one lonely but hunky firefighter hero still grieving for his lost sister, add spunky but commitment phobic heroine. Heat well – and repeatedly – to produce a tasty romance. Essentially a second chance romance and a good read.

Kristen Ashley’s Every Year [Chaos Motorcycle Club series] is a ‘finding Christmas’ story that apparently contains characters from the series. Since I have missed this series somehow, I was pleased there was enough back story provided that I avoided those ‘huh?’ moments you occasionally find when entering a series in the middle.

Silent Night [Last Chance ] by Hope Ramsay has a ‘hard-luck Christmas’ theme with some nice echoes of the original Christmas story. Fate takes a hand to bring two hurting people together to find love and family under a Christmas star.

I fell in love with the title for Molly Cannon’s Have Yourself a Messy Little Christmas [Everson, Texas series ]. The hero’s mother hires a professional organizer and sics her onto the hero to clean up his act and decorate for Christmas. Needless to say the hero STRONGLY resents this. [As a piler myself I admit I sympathized with the hero, the rule at my house is touch my desk and die!] Of course she wins him over, eventually…

A Family for Christmas [Tallgrass series] by Marilyn Pappano  is an ‘opposites attract’ story – with a large dose of Christmas spirit provided by the heroine.

Like any anthology, there are stories I loved and those that were good but not great. Each story is augmented by a comment from the author and an excerpt of one of their other works is provided at the end of the story. [It was kind of like a TV show; ‘and now a word from our sponsors…’ but I did get some leads on other stories to pursue.] Since I need to give an overall rating I will have to go with ‘4’. It’s definitely worth picking up.
